🚗 Remembering I-44 Expansion 61 Years Ago

Last week, Vintage St. Louis shared a photo from July 30, 1962, when a nine-mile stretch of Interstate 44 opened between Eureka and Gray Summit. This new section replaced the hazardous "Death-Lane," a three-lane portion of U.S. 66. The expansion allowed drivers to travel on a four-lane highway from Sylvan Beach (just west of where modern day 270 & 44 cross) to Springfield, improving safety and convenience.

🏛️ Chesterfield Dissolves Historic Committee

The Chesterfield City Council has unanimously voted to dissolve the Chesterfield Historic and Landmark Preservation Committee after several years of deliberation. The decision follows a controversial approval of modifications to the Old House in Hog Hollow. The city will now handle historic preservation duties, with the Architectural Review Board taking on a regulatory role.

As the summer season comes to a close, the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center is inviting families to participate in the last Splash & Play and Tot Time events. 🚧 Lodge Lower Level Closed for Maintenance

The entire lower level of the Lodge will be closed from August 5-11 for scheduled maintenance. This includes the fitness center, indoor pool, group exercise classes, gymnasium, walking track, locker rooms, and sauna & steam room. Tot Care will also be closed during this time. Lodge members can use the Sunset Hills Community Center during the closure.

💰 Former Alderman Must Repay $292K in Embezzlement

A former Des Peres alderman, John Pound, 81, was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay $292,305 in restitution after pleading guilty to three counts of wire fraud. Pound admitted to embezzling from clients of his real estate management company between 2010 and 2020, taking inflated fees, commissions, and hourly rates.

📚 Geggie's Librarian Sparks Summer Reading Fun

In an effort to promote reading and prevent learning loss during the summer months, Geggie Elementary School's librarian, Kristina Presley, has organized a book scavenger hunt for the past four years. The hunt, which takes place twice each summer, has grown from 20 hidden books to around 45 per hunt, scattered throughout Eureka's parks, businesses, and neighborhoods. The activity brings families together and encourages students to become lifelong readers.
