CITY HIGHLIGHTS

Ballwin

Here's the latest from Monday night's Board of Aldermen meeting:

  • The Vlasis Park Playground project, a major renovation that has been in the works for a few years, will move forward after the Board approved cost-saving measures totaling $200,000. Despite receiving only one bid that was higher than expected, city staff worked with the bidder to identify savings without sacrificing play value or amenities. The Board approved a contract not to exceed $992,279 to complete the project, which is partially funded by grants.

  • The Board granted approval for asbestos abatement to take place before the old police station is demolished in June. This necessary step will ensure the demolition can occur safely.

  • A robust discussion was held regarding the upcoming transition of the school resource officer (SRO) position at Selvidge Middle School. The current SRO is approaching the end of his four-year term, and while many parents and school staff would like him to remain, the city aims to adhere to the term limits set in the police union contract. The Board is considering a compromise that would allow the next SRO to shadow the current officer for a period of time to ensure a smooth transition. The goal is to balance the interests of the school community, the police department, and the individual officers' professional development.

  • A report was given on the successful first responder health fair that was recently held at The Pointe community center. The event was well-attended and celebrated the work of local first responders.
